Il comprend neuf chansons récemment écrites par Springsteen, ainsi que de nouveaux enregistrements inédits de trois de ses titres légendaires des années 1970, "Janey needs a shooter", "If I was the priest" et "Song for orphans". Springsteen est rejoint sur "Letter to you" par Roy Bittan, Nils Lofgren, Patti Scialfa, Garry Tallent, Stevie Van Zandt, Max Weinberg, Charlie Giordano et Jake Clemons.
